For the third year in a row, as September gets into full swing, the Kaunas Faculty of Vilnius University community is invited to compete in sports competitions using obsolete computer equipment. This year, after the winners are announced and the prizes are awarded, a professional discussion will be held for those seeking answers on how artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are changing the work of IT specialists and their preparedness for the labour market. Although artificial intelligence creates the illusion that anyone can work in any field without specific education, knowing, understanding, and applying it ethically and responsibly is necessary to master technology.
“We are starting the new season with the slogan "Between words and numbers." We want to emphasise that modern specialists need an interdisciplinary education since work practice requires knowledge in various fields and a wide range of soft skills. We are an interdisciplinary faculty employing researchers and lecturers in the humanities, social sciences, and computer science. Therefore, students can flexibly build their individual knowledge portfolio, not limiting themselves to the subjects of the study programme, but also choosing individual study courses. By participating in projects, idea hackathons, competitions, and scientific research, students learn from experienced lecturers, social partners, and each other.
I invite you to get some fresh air, experience the thrill of sport, and engage with the community. I am eagerly awaiting the discussion with experts – I do not doubt that many will gain new ideas and find answers about IT specialists' challenges today and possible ways to make their work easier using AI tools,“ says Assoc. Prof. Giedrius Romeika, the Dean of VU KnF.
In the context of IT transformation, the value of education is only increasing. Studying is not only about acquiring knowledge, but also about the opportunity to mature comprehensively and develop both professional and personal skills. The most important thing is the chance to experience the power of community, discover your niche, realise your potential, and contribute to progress with your ideas.
“Generative AI tools are fundamentally changing the reality of work in the IT sector – from code writing to decision-making. This transformation shows that today it is no longer enough to be able to code. Combining programming knowledge with the ability to collaborate effectively with AI is becoming increasingly important. This change alters the career prospects of programmers at different levels. It encourages us to rethink how higher education institutions should train specialists who are not only capable of creating technological solutions but also of critically evaluating and creatively using AI tools. It is debatable whether AI can encourage students to become more creative problem solvers or, conversely, reinforce their dependence on technology,” says Assoc. Prof. Kęstutis Driaunys, the lecturer of VU KnF Bachelor’s study programme Information Systems and Cyber Security.
knfWe will seek answers to these and other questions in a discussion with social partners and lecturers of the Kaunas Faculty of Vilnius University:
